Calendar 2010

Not that nothing's been happening!

It's just that I just haven't updated the much calendar in a few of years.

During 2007 to 2010 I put the Horizon rehearsal and performance workshops temporarily on hold.
This was largely because I wanted to create some resources that workshop members needed.
This led to the creation of my online chord finder (Sound Thinking) and song transposition software
(Key Switch), both of which are running on my educational website, www.TheoreticallyCorrect.com

In 2010 I returned to teaching monthly fiddle workshops for kids, now at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse.
I hope to start teaching rehearsal and performance workshops again in the spring or summer of 2011.

July 31 - August 7 2010

Lark Camp 2010 — 30th Year!

This year I'm teaching old-time mandolin and old-time fiddle at Lark Camp. Last year I taught old-time mandolin and led an instrumental jam workshop — both were incredibly fun.

If you've never been to a music camp, Lark Camp is a great one to start with. The location (Mendocino Woodlands) is a gorgeous redwood forest setting, with WPA built cabins and halls.

The range of music incredible, and spread out over three camps. An amazing list of classes and instructors. Lots of jaming and performances. Plus really good food and dances both dance halls every night. Tent, cabin, or vehicle camping. Even if you don't take the classes it's one of the best vacations you can have.

Lark Camp 2009

I've been to Lark Camp on five occasions, just for fun. This year Mickey asked to teach old-time mandolin and an instumental jam workshop.

If you've never been to a music camp, this is a great one to start with. The location (Medocino Woodlands is gorgeous. The range of music incredible, and spread out over three camps. Lots of jaming and performances. Plus really good food and two dances every night. Tent, cabin, or vehicle camping. Even if you don't take the classes it's one of the best vacations you can have.

Cloverdale Fiddle Contest 2006

31st Annual Old Time
Fiddle Contest and Festival

The Cloverdale contest is one of the nicest indoor contests I've attended. There are lot's of areas to jam or warm-up for the competition. You'll hear lots of Texas-style (contest style fiddling), but unlike many contests, at Cloverdale there's an emphasis on "old-time" style ... includng an old-time and old-time waltz division. This year's festival includes a Twin Fiddle Division and two dances on Friday night.

Information on participation and rules at:
Fiddle Contest Rules

Update: Congratulations to my students who participated this year:

Elizabeth Englund: 4th place Junior Division
Katie Mitchell: 7th Place Junior Division
Karin Metzgar: 11th place Junior-Junior

It was the first time any of them had participated in a Fiddle Contest!

CCMC — Week Two

California Coast Music Camp

CCMC is a wonderful week long
music camp on the Gulala River.

Week Two: July 15-22

John will teach two classes at CCMC this year:
Partial Capo and Intermediate Fiddle

Partial Capo: Learn the partial capo approach to popular alternate tunings like DADGAD ... without retuning your guitar! John will cover flat-picking and Carter-style arrangements, finger-picking and accompaniment. First he’ll reveal the overwhelming relationship to standard tuning; then he’ll teach the “altered tuning” point of view. Shubb and Third Hand partial capos available at the CCMC music store.

Intermediate Old-time and Bluegrass Fiddle: Description to follow.

St. Patrick's Day Field Trip

"First it was a rumor.
Now it's a reality!"

On St. Patty's Day the Horizon Workshop will hold our meeting at the Stadium Pub in Walnut Creek for an authentic Irish music session --with fiddles, mandolins and guitars and vocals!

The fun starts between 7:00 and 7:30 -- and we'll play 'til about 9:30. There's free food and drink for Horizon members.

It's an informal Irish music session, so come one, come all, and bring an instrument. There will be about 24 of us from Horizon crowding into the porch area ... so seating will be somewhat limited. But the windows between the main pub and the porch will be open, so I doubt we'll run out of room for those who want to listen. And we expect to see some of the members from Acoustic Instruments 101 come out for the evening.

For those you who are curious about the workshops, but don't know what we're up to, here's an opportunity to come and see for yourself.
